WHAT IS TAE KWON-DO? Tae Kwon-Do is a Korean martial art, which was inaugurated April 11th 1955 following extensive research and development by the founder. Its roots however stretch back nearly 2,000 years. The art at this early stage was known as Tae Kyon and was taught and practised among the youths of the Hwarang-Do. During the Japanese occupation of Korea (1910-1945) Japanese influences were introduced into the existing Koran martial arts. The Koreans adapted many karate techniques and incorporated them into their training curriculum. At first sight, TaeKwon-Do and karate look very similar – that is until the Korean adepts of TaeKwon-Do unleash their awesome kicking power. Translated ‘Tae’ literally means to jump, kick or smash with the foot ‘Kwon’ means a fist – chiefly to punch or destroy with the hand ‘Do’ means art, way or method To the Korean people Tae Kwon-Do is more than a mere use of skilled movements; it also implies a way of thinking and life, installing a concept and spirit of strict self-discipline. By practising Tae Kwon-Do one will benefit in these ways:- Physically: Good co-ordination, toning, reduction of weight, improved flexibility, cardiovascular conditioning, increased strength, general fitness. Mentally: Self confidence, self-discipline, better judgement, self control, stress reduction, better self image, positive attitude. Philosophically: Tae Kwon-Do stands for and promotes the principal of honesty, courtesy, humility, respect, courage, generosity, loyalty and perseverance. |
